Askesis Mindset Blog Post

A quick look online will yield a lot of viral posts on people complaining about the cost of living. One post from a national news organization splits a typical $60,000 annual salary into monthly budget amounts of:

$1,254 for housing
$380 for transportation
$190 utilities
$190 healthcare
$570 food
$570 savings and investing
$266 entertainment
$190 cash
$190 misc.

That’s when the comments begin.
“Impossible.”
“That car is too low”
“Proof that you can’t afford to live”
“No phone, no Netflix, be for real”
“Obviously no kids”

The truth? Most people aren’t reacting to the math. They’re reacting to what it reveals. That they live beyond their means, don’t want to give up comfort, and can’t imagine doing hard things that require change and sacrifice. We can generally break this down into three categories.

Entitlement

Entitlement says, “I work hard, so I should have this now.” It’s the voice in your head justifying the $200 concert or sports ticket, the daily takeout, or the luxury apartment by yourself that consumes most of your income. It’s not only a voice in your head, it’s billions of dollars in advertising from corporations who want you to believe that if you’re not living that life, are you living at all?

Here’s the problem: your wealth and financial future don’t care what you think you deserve. It rewards value, discipline, and smart decisions, not feelings.

Last year, the average American spent over $3,500 a year eating out, yet 63% said they live paycheck to paycheck. That’s not oppression, it’s avoidance.

Entitlement will always whisper, “You’ve earned it.” and “You deserve this.”

Askesis says, “Not yet.”

Comparison

Comparison is what keeps you broke while you try to look rich.

You see your friend’s $70,000 SUV and suddenly the paid-off Corolla seems embarrassing. You scroll past influencers flying overseas and wonder if you’re behind in life and missing out. Comparison eats your attention, peace, and eventually your wealth.

Here’s the truth: You’re comparing your behind the scenes to someone else’s highlight reel, which is usually funded by credit, privilege, or delusion.

While you’re calculating groceries to the dollar, they’re adding another Buy Now Pay Later to their credit stack. You’re literally watching a cosplay and letting it rewrite your goals.

Askesis demands you go the other way. Delay the status. Delay the comfort. Build quietly, while they perform out loud. You’ll pass them, in silence.

Blame

It is always easier to point outward than inward. Look at the amount of effort spent online and the pure consumption of stress, anger, and hatred to blame everyone and everything but yourself. We’ll blame politics, the economy, your parents, your job, or the system. Yes, systems can be unfair. Life isn’t an even playing field. But blame doesn’t make one bit of difference moving the needle.

Askesis never asks who’s at fault. It asks: What is in my control?

The average American still has a TV in every room, a car with monthly payments, and a smartphone that costs more than their emergency fund. That’s not systemic oppression, it’s a lack of personal accountability.

The Askesis mindset isn’t about ignoring reality, it’s about owning what’s yours and discarding the rest. Control the controllables and reject the excuses.

Harsh Reality – Conclusion

The simple fact is this: if everyone lived an intentional Askesis life, the economy would collapse under the weight of reduced consumption. Corporations would panic. Debt-driven markets would stall and growth with come to a grinding halt.

But we know that won’t happen.

Most people will continue to spend beyond their means, blame others for their situation, and numb themselves with comparison and comfort. And that’s exactly where the opportunity lies.

If you do the opposite, cut the noise, embrace discomfort, and reject status, you create margin. Margin creates power. Power creates freedom.

While they chase more, you build more.
While they react, you remain grounded.
While they wait, you continue moving forward.

That’s the Askesis edge. Profit from the chaos by refusing to play the same game. The world is distracted. Cut through the noise, focus on the signal.
